In a decisive move towards upholding the highest standards of integrity in the administration of Nigeria’s resources, President Bola Tinubu has suspended Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, from office with immediate effect.
This action, driven by President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to transparency, was announced through a statement issued by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), on Monday in Abuja.
In addition to the suspension, President Tinubu has directed the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into all financial transactions involving the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, along with any associated agencies.
The suspended Minister, Dr. Betta Edu, has been instructed to hand over her responsibilities to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. Furthermore, President Tinubu emphasizes the importance of her full cooperation with the investigating authorities during the inquiry.
To address systemic issues, the President has established a panel headed by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance. This panel is tasked with conducting a comprehensive diagnostic on the financial architecture and framework of the social investment programmes. The objective is to institute conclusive reforms in the relevant institutions and programs, eliminating any institutional frailties and rebuilding public confidence in these initiatives, particularly for the exclusive benefit of disadvantaged households.
These directives from President Tinubu are effective immediately, demonstrating a resolute commitment to accountability and the well-being of the nation. The government remains steadfast in its pursuit of a governance framework that prioritizes the welfare of all citizens and fosters public trust in the nation’s initiatives.
