In a joint effort with the Nigerian Navy, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated an investigation into 14 individuals suspected of involvement in oil theft in Port Harcourt. The suspects were apprehended alongside a Motor Fishing Trawler (MFT), named Hawwau Tanko, which was handed over to the EFCC by the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base in Bayelsa State.
The arrests stem from an incident on February 27, 2024, where a detachment of the 5th Battalion of the Nigerian Army intercepted the MFT Hawwau Tanko, laden with approximately 10,000 liters of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) in Fish Town Rivers, Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa State. The vessel’s captain, Kolapo Gafar, and thirteen others were detained on suspicion of illegal oil bunkering.
Commander Murtala Aminu Rogo of the Forward Operating Base, Formoso, emphasized the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to combating crude oil theft and illegal bunkering in the maritime domain. He stated that such activities constitute economic sabotage and will not be tolerated.
Assistant Commander of the EFCC, Ahmed Muhammed Ghali, assured the public of thorough investigations and possible prosecution of the suspects. He commended the collaborative efforts between the EFCC and the Nigerian Navy in tackling illegal oil bunkering and ensuring maritime security.
The EFCC reaffirmed its determination to minimize illegal oil bunkering activities and hold perpetrators accountable under the law. The suspects and seized evidence will undergo further scrutiny as part of the ongoing investigation.
