Air Peace is under scrutiny after allegations emerged that valuable items, including a smartphone and three laptops, went missing during a Lagos to Abuja flight on Friday evening. The incident, affecting three passengers, reportedly occurred on the airline’s last flight of the day around 7:00 pm.
One of the affected passengers, Lere Adams, recounted the experience, stating that the theft was discovered upon arrival at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja. Items belonging to a Briton and an Indian national were also reported missing. Adams noted that the stolen items included his smartphone, which was plugged into a power bank inside his luggage, and two laptops from an American passenger’s backpack.
Adams described the chaos and frustration that ensued as passengers realized their belongings were missing. “When we landed in Abuja, I realized I could not locate my phone. Similarly, an Indian passenger lost his wallet and laptop, and an American lost two laptops,” he said.
The passengers immediately reported the theft to the airline staff. However, they were left without a clear explanation or resolution. According to Adams, the airline has since contacted their Lagos headquarters and launched an investigation.
Michael Achimugu, Director of Consumer Protection & Public Affairs at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), stated that no official complaints had yet been made to the agency but assured that the matter would be investigated. “The right process is to complain to the airline first. If the airline does not take appropriate action, the affected passengers can report to the NCAA,” Achimugu said.
As of the time of reporting, Air Peace’s Communications Operations Officer, Stanley Olisa, had not responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
This incident raises serious concerns about passenger security and the handling of personal belongings on flights, prompting calls for more stringent measures to prevent future occurrences.
