Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information & Strategy, in a statement released on Wednesday January 24, 2024, addressed growing misconceptions surrounding recent administrative decisions, emphasizing that there is no intention to relocate the Federal Capital to Lagos.
The statement highlighted the deliberate misinterpretation by certain elements aiming to instigate ethnic mistrust, specifically citing the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decision to relocate its Department of Banking Supervision and the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development’s directive for the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to return its head office to Lagos.
Onanuga dismissed rumours linking these decisions to a purported plan by President Bola Tinubu to move the Federal Capital back to Lagos, attributing such claims to political opponents during the previous election cycle. The spokesperson noted that these renewed assertions were driven by dishonest ethnic and regional champions seeking undue attention.
He stressed the permanence of Abuja as the Federal Capital, supported by legal backing, and clarified that the relocation of FAAN to Lagos was an administrative move with the agency maintaining a presence in Abuja. Similarly, the move of the Department of Banking Supervision of the CBN to Lagos was characterized as a routine administrative adjustment given the concentration of commercial banks in Lagos.
Onanuga urged restraint and cautioned against politicizing administrative decisions, emphasizing that the President Tinubu-led administration is committed to fairness and equity across all regions. He emphasized the need for citizens to focus on good governance and cautioned against rumor-mongering, describing it as a disservice to the collective aspirations of the Nigerian people.
The spokesperson concluded by affirming the administration’s dedication to meeting the yearnings and aspirations of the citizens through diligent governance.
