Nigerian Blogger Penalized for Spreading Falsehoods About MFM Church and General Overseer
In a significant legal triumph, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) secures a victory in a defamation case against Nigerian blogger Funke Ashekun, who was ordered by a US court to pay $50,000 for spreading false information about the church and its General Overseer, Dr. Olukoya.
For the past three years, Funke Ashekun, a Nigerian residing in the United States, had been using social media platforms to disseminate unfounded allegations against MFM Church and its revered leader, Dr. Olukoya. Despite numerous advisories urging her to desist from her damaging mission, Ashekun persisted, under the mistaken belief that geographical distance would shield her actions.
Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (US) promptly took legal action against Ashekun, resulting in a swift resolution. A unanimous jury ruled in favor of MFM USA and its pastors, Grace Ugeh, Kunle Ladipo, and Adekunle Adekola. The court awarded a substantial sum of $50,000 in damages, emphasizing that Ashekun’s defamatory statements had cast the church and its pastors in a false light.
Expressing satisfaction with the outcome, Gilbert Garcia, the lead counsel for Mountain of Fire, noted that the verdict vindicated the ministry’s position. This legal victory serves as a resounding affirmation of MFM’s commitment to safeguarding its reputation against baseless attacks.
