Olasunkanmi ODUNTAN –
In a momentous event, Lagos State Governor, Mr Jide Sanwo-Olu, alongside key stakeholders, celebrated the arrival of the CMA CGM SCANDOLA, a groundbreaking LNG-powered container vessel, at the Lagos Lekki Deep Sea Port – Nigeria’s most advanced and deepest seaport.
Measuring an impressive overall length (LOA) of 366 meters and a width of 51 meters, the CMA CGM SCANDOLA marks a historic milestone as the first LNG-powered container vessel to grace West Africa’s shores, making its initial stop in Tema before docking at the Lekki Port.
The significance of this achievement is underscored by the fact that Lekki Deep Sea Port stands as the sole port in Nigeria equipped to accommodate such colossal container vessels. Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed commendation for the remarkable feat, praising the collaborative efforts of Lekki Port, Lekki Freeport Terminal, and CMA CGM in elevating the Nigerian maritime industry. He acknowledged the ongoing successes and milestones achieved since the port’s commissioning.
Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise Limited (LPLEL), a joint venture enterprise comprising Lekki Port Investment Holdings Inc (China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. and Tolaram) with a 75% stake, the Lagos State Government with 20%, and the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) holding 5%, continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s maritime landscape.
