The Federal High Court in Abuja and the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt have issued contradictory arrest orders for the Chief of Staff (CoS) to the Rivers State governor, Hon Edison Ehie, in connection to alleged terrorism charges.
Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted a warrant for Ehie’s arrest, accusing him of involvement in the burning of the State House of Assembly. The arrest order also extended to five other individuals based in Port Harcourt: Jinjiri Bala, Happy Benedict, Progress Joseph, Adokiye Oyagiri, and Chibuike Peter (Rambo).
In a conflicting move, Justice Sika Aprioku of the Rivers State High Court granted a motion ex-parte filed by Ehie, preventing the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from arresting him. The court set the hearing for the substantive application on February 6, 2024.
The arrest warrant issued by Justice Nwite was based on an ex-parte application brought by the inspector-general of police, citing charges such as conspiracy, arson, terrorism, attempted murder, and the murder of a Superintendent of Police, Bako Agbashim, along with five other police informants.
The defendants were declared wanted, and the court ordered their arrest for trial upon apprehension and investigation. The case adds complexity to the ongoing legal proceedings, as conflicting court decisions raise questions about the jurisdiction and resolution of the allegations against Ehie and his co-accused.
In a separate development, the Amaewhule-led lawmakers submitted criminal petitions to the Rivers State Police Command against Ehie, demanding his arrest and prosecution for alleged involvement in the burning of the State House of Assembly. The situation awaits further clarity as legal proceedings unfold.
