The Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR) has petitioned authorities over alleged attempted murder, conspiracy, and abuse of police authority linked to a land dispute in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, CHSR President, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, said the organization received a petition from one Mr. Kolawale Oluakamo, who alleged repeated attacks by suspected land grabbers working in connivance with a serving police officer.
According to the petition, the disputed property—four plots of land at Ijagemo Road, Tailor Bus Stop, valued at over ₦40 million—belongs to Mr. Oluakamo’s elder sister, who resides abroad but granted him power of attorney to manage the land. He claimed to have been in lawful possession for more than a decade with valid survey plans and receipts.
Allegations of Attack
Mr. Oluakamo accused Inspector Ifeanyi Onyekwene of Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, of threatening his life on February 2, 2025, by allegedly firing a gunshot at him, which he narrowly escaped.
He further alleged that the family head, Mr. Akeem Ajakaye, hired the officer and armed thugs to seize the land.
Other reported incidents include:
April 16, 2025: Armed men allegedly stormed the property, fired shots, and destroyed property.
September 23, 2025: Mr. Oluakamo was allegedly attacked, beaten, and warned never to return to the land.
Omotehinse condemned the situation, describing it as “not just a land dispute but a direct attack on life, human rights, and the rule of law.” He cautioned that the police must not become an instrument of land grabbing.
CHSR Demands
The rights group called for:
- The immediate suspension and investigation of Inspector Onyekwene.
- An independent probe by the Police Service Commission and Lagos State Command with civilian oversight.
- Arrest and prosecution of all suspects once culpability is established.
- Protection for Mr. Oluakamo and the rightful property owner.
- A public statement by the Nigeria Police Force to reassure citizens.
Omotehinse warned that failure to act could escalate the matter into wider communal violence. “Justice delayed is justice denied. Accountability ignored is impunity rewarded. Nigeria cannot afford either,” he declared.
Police React
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of Zone 2 Command, CSP Ayuba, confirmed that investigations had commenced. He disclosed that the officer named in the petition had been invited by the AIG in charge of Zone 2, Mr. Adegoke, and assured that disciplinary actions would be taken where necessary.
