The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved the appointment of Adebayo Lawal as the new Deputy Governor, following the impeachment of Rauf Olaniyan.
Governor Seyi Makinde, in a letter to the lawmakers on Monday, nominated Lawal as replacement for Olaniyan.
Defending the nomination of Lawal, the House Majority Leader, Sanjo Adedoyin, urged the House to consider the nomination, approve and adopt it in view of the nominee’s antecedents and contributions to the progress of the state.
The Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin, had put the nomination to a voice vote and received a unanimous “yes” response.
As reported earlier that, Olaniyan had been impeached, following the recommendation of a seven-man panel of inquiry set up by the Chief Judge, Munta Abimbola, to investigate him over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
Prior to his appointment, Lawal who hails from Kisi in Irepo Local Government Area of the state, was the Chairman of the Oyo State Housing Corporation and also served as the Attorney-General of the state.
He had earlier been nominated by Makinde as his running mate in the forthcoming 2023 governorship election in the state.
