As news of the latest banditry activity in the Maradun area of Zamfara State circulates, deep investigative journalism has taken center stage regarding the ongoing insecurity in the region.
An indigene of Maradun and appointee of the Zamfara State government (name withheld) has called on the President, the Inspector General of Police, and all heads of security agencies to swiftly caution Governor Dauda Lawal regarding his recent decision to play politics at the expense of the lives of Zamfara indigenes. In an interesting conversation, the state government appointee stated that the attack appeared poorly scripted, raising questions such as why the State Government House Press Bus was sighted at the scene just seven minutes after the bandits struck.
Furthermore, why did the attack occur near the home of the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle? Could it be that Matawalle and the Chief of Defence Staff’s recent actions against bandits and terrorists in the Northwest have provoked a cabal seeking revenge?
“A situation where the state government sponsors criminals to attack a community just to discredit a political rival, regardless of the potential casualties, is highly condemnable,” the anonymous appointee stated.
He confirmed that most of those taken by the bandits were vulnerable community members, particularly those unable to flee.
“Security agencies should investigate the attack and remain vigilant to prevent further assaults by state-sponsored attack agents, as it is clear that Governor Dauda is intent on making a futile point without regard for the peace and safety of Zamfara State,” he concluded.
Reports indicate that after the attack, the Zamfara State government inflated the number of casualties to 40. Maradun citizens are disturbed by the government’s apparent celebration of the attack.
Mr. Mohammed Dogo, a native of Maradun, revealed that there are more undercover revelations about the attack than mere words can convey. He questioned why state government press officers arrived at the scene with cameras instead of mobilizing security personnel to pursue the bandits.
“I am a retired school teacher and a respected elder in my community, Janbako. The attack is unfortunate; two persons lost their lives, and five villagers were taken away,” Dogo confirmed.
This attack occurred over the weekend, just days after the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, challenged Governor Dauda Lawal and General Aliyu Gusau to swear on the Holy Quran regarding their innocence concerning banditry and terrorism in Zamfara State.
