In a stunning display of creativity and technical skill, 15-year-old Daniel Babalola Ayodele, a student at Christ Apostolic Grammar School, Iperu Remo, has developed a prototype Automated Teller Machine (ATM). This groundbreaking achievement was revealed during the Build-a-Thon event held from January 22 to 25, 2024, in Ogun State.
The Build-a-Thon, organized by the Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, in partnership with The Raspberry Foundation and supported by the National Communications Commission, gathered 500 students from public secondary schools across Ogun State. The event aimed to cultivate a tech-savvy generation by providing hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies such as Raspberry Pi, Embedded Systems, Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet of Things.
During the event, participants engaged in various projects, including Smart Homes, Robotic Hands, and Electric Cars. Daniel, alongside his peers from Christ Apostolic Grammar School, initially worked on a Traffic Light and Alarm prototype. Motivated by this experience, Daniel undertook a solo project to create a prototype ATM, which successfully dispenses cash using a card and PIN.
Constructed using materials such as cardboard, a rotor, paper tape, and a Raspberry Pi Pico Zero, Daniel’s ATM prototype has gone viral online, sparking widespread calls for recognition and support for the young innovator. In response, Daniel has expressed his desire for a smartphone, a laptop, materials for further prototypes, and a scholarship to study Robotics Engineering at a prestigious university.
There is a growing appeal for the Ogun State Government, led by Governor Dapo Abiodun, to support and nurture Daniel’s talents. The state’s commitment to ICT is exemplified by the establishment of the Ogun Tech Hub, and Daniel’s skills align perfectly with the state’s vision for technological advancement.
Governor Abiodun, who recently celebrated his 64th birthday and the first anniversary of his second term, is being urged to recognize Daniel as a Brand Ambassador for the Gateway State, furthering the state’s educational and technological initiatives.
