Allegations of Misappropriation Lead to Legal Battle
In a significant legal development, the impeached Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, along with two other state Assembly officers, Dayo Samuel and Adeyemo Adedeji, were docked in a Federal High Court in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta on Monday. The trio is facing charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged misappropriation of N2.5 billion.
Impeachment and Legal Battle Unfold
Oluomo is accused of committing the fraud during his tenure as the Speaker of the Assembly in 2022. Apart from the financial irregularities, 18 out of 26 lawmakers had previously signed for his impeachment. The charges against Oluomo include allegations of high-handedness, gross misconduct, arrogance, poor leadership style, lack of focus, and transparency, which led to a divisive atmosphere among Assembly members.
Despite the impeachment, Oluomo has not backed down. He has initiated a legal battle against the Assembly members, expressing his determination to fight back.
Court Adjourns Hearing
On Monday, as the three defendants entered the dock, it was discovered that the EFCC’s counsel was absent. Subsequently, Justice O.O Okeke adjourned the case to 29th February and 1st of March, setting the stage for a legal confrontation between the accused former Speaker and the anti-graft agency.
