In a legal move, Ugochukwu Orakwue, a Kogi resident, has filed a lawsuit seeking N50 million in general damages against the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC). Orakwue contends that the AEDC deliberately issued inaccurate bills by relying on inflated estimated bills instead of reading his postpaid meter.
The plaintiff is urging the court to restrain the AEDC from continuing to issue bills based on estimation and insists that bills should reflect the actual readings of his postpaid meter, citing a violation of regulations set by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
An excerpt from the lawsuit states, “A declaration that all electricity bills issued based on estimation are null, void, and of no legal effect. A declaration that the AEDC’s practice of concealing the claimant’s meter status contravenes NERC’s regulations and is therefore illegal.”
During the recent court hearing, the AEDC’s counsel, Mr. G.D. Dubai, informed the court of ongoing discussions with the claimant for a potential out-of-court settlement. Most issues raised have been forwarded to the AEDC’s headquarters in Abuja for consideration.
The court has adjourned the case to February 22, awaiting a report on the progress of the settlement or potential continuation of the hearing.
