The Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art (YSMA) at Pan-Atlantic University is excited to announce the opening of Collecting Now: Perspectives on Contemporary Art Collecting in Nigeria on Saturday, October 26, 2024. This innovative exhibition highlights the journeys of six influential Nigerian art collectors who have significantly shaped contemporary Nigerian art.
Featuring works from notable collectors including Prince Yemisi Shyllon, Kola Aina, Gbenga & Aisha Oyebode, Dotun Sulaiman, Adeniyi Adenubi, and Eyamba Dafinone, the exhibition emphasizes the vital role collectors play in the art ecosystem. Prince Yemisi Shyllon, a leading figure in this space, has been instrumental in elevating the profile of Nigerian art globally.
Dr. Jess Castellote, Director of the YSMA, remarked, “Collecting Now explores the vision and passion of these remarkable collectors, showcasing their role as patrons and storytellers in the contemporary Nigerian art narrative.”
With over 80 curated works spanning painting, sculpture, and mixed media, the exhibition offers a unique glimpse into the diverse tastes and philosophies of the participating collectors. Kola Aina, Chairman of the YSMA Advisory Board, noted, “The choices of collectors help preserve our cultural heritage and promote vibrant African artistic expressions.”
Collecting Now will run from October 26, 2024, to February 28, 2025. The public is invited to the opening reception on October 26 at 2:00 PM at the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art, with free admission.
