Chief Okunowo Assumes Role as Chairman of Ijebu Congress Board of Trustees, Declares a New Era of “Serious Business”

The Ijebu Congress ushered in a new chapter with its inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday, 27th September 2024, at Keye Hall, Egbe Bobakeye Centre in Ijebu Ode. The historic event, presided over by the newly installed Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Bobasuwa Chief Christopher Olufunmilola Okunowo, marked a significant turning point for the Congress as it embarks on a fresh phase of growth and strategic development.

In his opening address, Chief Okunowo declared that Congress was now entering a phase of “serious business,” signalling a decisive shift toward greater focus on achieving tangible results. His declaration was met with enthusiastic approval from members, both physically present and those joining virtually from across the globe, including the diaspora. This marks the Congress’ renewed commitment to driving progress and fulfilling its mission to promote the socio-economic and cultural advancement of Ijebuland.

A major highlight of the AGM was the presentation of the Congress’ audited financial report by Gbenga Badejo & Co., the appointed auditors. The comprehensive report provided a detailed account of the organization’s financial activities, ensuring transparency and building trust among members. The report was unanimously approved, reinforcing confidence in the Congress’ financial health and its capacity to judiciously manage resources for future projects.

In line with its commitment to ensuring accountability, the Congress also announced the appointment of a three-member audit committee that will oversee its financial activities going forward. The committee includes notable members such as Professor Lasun Gbadamosi, Mr. Yinka Alese, and retired Colonel MKO Awokoya. Their expertise will help ensure that the Congress maintains the highest standards of financial stewardship, with regular oversight to keep operations transparent and fiscally responsible.

The AGM also ratified the report of the Executive Council, which includes the names of the new Exco and their portfolios, led by Prince Bunmi Mebude. This unanimous endorsement reflected the members’ confidence in the leadership team’s ability to steer the Congress toward its ambitious goals. In addition, the appointment of new Trustees further strengthened the Congress’ leadership and governance structures, setting the stage for long-term strategic growth.

The AGM also saw members paying glowing tributes to the pioneer Chairman, Mr. Tunji Ayanlaja SAN, whose visionary leadership laid the foundation for the organization’s current success.
