…Enugu Zonal Command of EFCC Takes Legal Action
In a courtroom drama, Barrister Mike Ikegbunam faced charges of money laundering and obtaining by false pretence totalling N91,000,000.00. The arraignment occurred on January 31, 2024, before Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Independence Layout, Enugu State.
The charges against Ikegbunam include inducing the Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes, and Associated Institutions of Nigeria to part with N25,000,000.00 under false pretenses. Ikegbunam pleaded “not guilty” to the seven-count charge.
The EFCC, represented by Counsel Nuradeen Shehu Ingawa, sought a trial date and requested the defendant’s remand at the Correctional Centre. The defence, led by A. G. Anyigo argued for bail, highlighting Ikegbunam’s standing in society. Ingawa vehemently opposed, emphasizing the gravity of the charges.
Justice Umar granted bail on self-recognizance, requiring Ikegbunam to deposit his Call to Bar Certificate and secure a cousin as a surety. Pending bail fulfillment, the defendant was remanded at the EFCC custody. The trial is set for March 21, 2024.
Ikegbunam’s arrest on July 12, 2023, stemmed from claims by the Senior Staff Association, alleging payment of N91 million for 130 plots of land. Investigations revealed Ikegbunam had refunded N10,000,000.00 but used N16,500,000.00 for personal land acquisition in Awka, Anambra State.
