In a week of relentless pursuit against drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded major successes, seizing over 600,000 tramadol pills, arresting an ex-beauty queen turned drug kingpin, and nabbing multiple suspects across the country.
Airport Arrest and Excreted Cocaine: Highlighting the agency’s vigilance, operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, apprehended a Brazil returnee, Udechukwu Ekene Theophilus, attempting to smuggle 60 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.279 kilograms. Initially refusing a body scan, Theophilus eventually excreted the illicit drugs after being placed under observation.
Massive Tramadol Seizure: In another significant operation, NDLEA officers at the Lagos airport discovered and confiscated a staggering 599,900 tramadol pills concealed in an overstayed cargo from Pakistan. The consignment, intercepted after months of monitoring, highlights the agency’s proactive approach in tackling drug importation.
Nationwide Raids Net Cannabis and Codeine: The week also saw NDLEA operatives across the country making significant cannabis and codeine busts. In Kano alone, over 1,100kg of cannabis were seized, while arrests were made in Jigawa, Yobe, Kogi, and Plateau states, with significant quantities of cannabis and codeine recovered.
Ex-Beauty Queen on the Run: Adding a dramatic twist to the week’s events, the NDLEA declared Ms. Aderinoye Queen Christmas, a former beauty queen and founder of the Queen Christmas Foundation, wanted after she evaded arrest during a raid on her Lekki, Lagos residence. Accused of drug trafficking, Christmas escaped, leaving behind incriminating evidence, including large quantities of cannabis and drug packaging materials.
WADA Campaign Intensified: Alongside its enforcement efforts, the NDLEA continued its “War Against Drug Abuse” (WADA) campaign, reaching out to students, teachers, and communities across the country. Advocacy lectures and sensitization programs aimed at curbing drug demand were held in states like Adamawa, Ogun, Lagos, Oyo, Katsina, and Anambra.
NDLEA Chief Commends Operatives: Praising the efforts of his officers, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended the “outstanding feats” of the agency’s various commands. He further applauded the nationwide intensification of WADA campaigns, emphasizing the importance of a balanced approach in tackling both drug supply and demand.
The past week’s operations demonstrate the NDLEA’s unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking and promoting drug awareness in Nigeria.
