If you’re one of those with the mindset that trade is for the illiterate or people who aren’t academically sound. I’m sorry you’re really missing it.
If you think that acquiring a skill aside cognitive sounds absurd, then this article is for you.
Stay glued to the end as I unveil these cogent reasons why you should learn a trade most especially as a student.
A trade is a job requiring manual skill and special training which ranges from fashion designing to hair dressing, catering, interior and exterior decorations, beauty and cosmetics, barbing, mechanical and electrical works, plumbing, bricklaying and building works, carpentry and lots more, the list is endless.
Learning a trade is really interesting as you can learn one in less than a year, you’re not limited by academic qualifications.
Trade has a very wide range of options to choose from depending on how lucrative you view it.
There are lots of compelling reasons why you should learn a trade but we’ll be addressing a few.
- It solves 90% of your financial burdens: Having a trade at hand will relieve you of your financial burdens as you get to attend to your petty and big needs with little or no stress, funding minor and major bills while in school won’t be something difficult when you’re into a trade… Financial constraints won’t be a barrier to you achieving your goals, no matter how big they are.
- Independence: Being independent can be one of the best feeling ever, waking up to know you can handle whatever comes your way financially… That feeling of being your own boss is heavenly, you get to take decisions all by yourself.
- Learning a trade is one of the best way to pursue a lucrative and fulfilling career: Trade is highly practicable, unlike the cognitive been taught in most higher institutions nowadays, where one is taught only the theoretical knowledge without knowing the practical application to day-to-day living… You’ll have a career to fall back to when white-collar job isn’t forthcoming, rather than waiting endlessly for a government job that isn’t certain. This way you can live a fulfilling life.
- Trade skills are well sought-after by businesses and organisations all over the world: Most organizations are no longer interested in what your certificate can offer, they’re more interested in what you can offer as a person, your skills and your abilities. In this present dispensation, more value is placed on psychomotor rather than cognitive. The demand for skilled labor in organizations is very high.
- You become a job creator and a problem solver: You may choose to employ people who would assist with your business, such way, you’re creating numerous job opportunities, thereby solving the societal problem of unemployment.
- Reduction in the rate of social vices: If every youth can learn a trade, definitely the alarming cases of internet frauds, drug trafficking, theft, robbery and other societal ills will drastically go down the drain as they’ll get involved in better legal alternatives to solving their financial issues.
- It gives you an edge over your contemporaries and competitors: When you have knowledge about a particular trade, it gives you an advantage over those who know nothing about such trade. With a touch of education, you can present yours and package it in such a way that will make your own business unique.
- Learning a trade presents you with a very wide range of opportunities and possibilities: You’re not limited to a particular field, you’re no longer in the dark as you’ll be fully aware of opportunities that’ll fetch you income daily, weekly or monthly.
- It keeps you busy: While some of your mates are bothered on where and how to spend their holidays and weekends, you’re settled already as you get to do what you love doing while earning at the same time. You can lay hands on a task during your leisure and you expect some returns at the end of the day. A practical example is this ongoing ASUU strike, it’s a blessing in disguise to those who already learned a trade, it gives them time to concentrate fully on their business, they get so busy, they wish the strike continues.
With this few points listed above, I’m sure you need no soothsayer to tell you that the importance of learning a trade as a student cannot be overemphasized.
Mind you, I’m not saying you should abandon your studies and go learn a trade, no, what I’m saying in essence is, a trade is a feather to your cap, it’s a side hustle that’ll help you financially and in other aspects of life.
Remember, don’t ever let your trade interfere with your studies, learn to balance between your academics and your trade, none must suffer for the other, as both are important.
