2024 World Youth Skills Day: Ogun Youth Chairman Calls For Enhanced Technical & Vocational Education

The youth leadership of Ogun State has joined the global community in celebrating the 2024 World Youth Skills Day. This day is particularly dedicated to recognizing the critical role that technical, vocational and entrepreneurship education plays in addressing the challenges faced by young people in our society.

In a commemoration message signed by the State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Olóyè Akolawole Shoremi, and made available to pressmen by the youth Spokesperson, Com. Abdul-Fatai Yinus, the Council identifies with the importance of equipping young people with practical and entrepreneurial skills stating its importance cannot be overstated.

“As we navigate through a period marked by economic uncertainties and a worrisome unemployment rate, it is essential to focus on educational models that provide our youth with the tools needed to succeed in the 21st century workforce. Technical and Vocational Education stands out as a viable solution to this pressing issue,” Shoremi said.

The Council also drew government’s attention to the need for substantial investment in our technical schools. Shoremi urged the State Government to prioritize the Technical Institutions in Idi Aba, Ajegunle, Ayetoro and Ijebu Ode in ensuring they are adequately funded and equipped to deliver high-quality technical and vocational training.

“Our goal is to see at least one technical or vocational training center established in each Federal constituency of Ogun State. This will make skills acquisition more accessible to our youth, thereby fostering a skilled and competent workforce.

“Additionally, we call on the government to consider the conversion of the State’s Model Colleges into technical Institutions. These facilities, if reviewed, can serve as key centers for technical and vocational education, addressing the current gap in skill acquisition infrastructure.

“This strategic move will not only revive these assets but also provide a new lease of life to many young people in Ogun State, empowering them with the skills needed to thrive in various industries.

“We believe that with concerted efforts from the government, private sector, and all relevant stakeholders, we can create an environment where every young person in Ogun State has the opportunity to acquire valuable skills and contribute meaningfully to the society,” Shoremi said.
